Mondo Beyondo is the fifth album from Brooklyn-based producer/DJ/multi-instrumentalist Alex Gimeno working under the James bond-referencing moniker Ursula 1000. But it sounds more like the work of some time-travelling, continent hopping super group.

Specifically, it sounds like Pizzicato Five, Deee-Lite, Tito Puente, Parliament and The B-52s decided to record a ’60s-inspired album with production help from Jamiroquai. It’s ridiculous and sprawling and loads of fun for girls and boys willing to check their genre-oriented inhibitions at the door. It doesn’t even hew to the ’60s thing all the way through. The lip gloss-smacking electro rap of “Baby Lazer Love” could be Sweet Tee working with Thomas Dolby. In reality, it’s Gimeno and a mysterious femcee called Ms. G, but Mondo Beyondo’s sonic chimeras inspire odd imaginings.

The B-52s connection, however, is no fantasy. Fred Schneider of the seminal US post-punk band guests on the goofball a-go-go groove of “Hey You!” Gimeno’s other collaborators only add to the impossible-super group feel. In addition to those already mentioned, this musically omnivorous maniac roped in French chanteuse Isabelle Antena, Argentinian songwriter Natalia Clavier, and lounge entertainer nonpareil Big Mike Geier. If you wanted, you could even count electric sitar as yet another guest star.

The balls-out fusion of disco, surf guitars, Latin funk, garage rock organs, and other assorted musical trail mix on the album beggars the descriptive imagination. One descriptive song title offers “Tropicadelica.” That almost manages to sum things up, but there’s so much more junk in this trunk. Like the spooky, retro electro-rock of “Graveyard Stomp.”

Cheesy? Oooh, maybe a little. But what do you expect from a guy with his own radio show called “Guilty Pleasures.” Mondo Beyondo is definitely a big, beautiful, pleasure. But we’re guessing he doesn’t feel that guilty about it. On reflection, neither do we.
