Like most of pop s smartest ladies, Holly Valance has been bitten by the 1980s bug. However, for State of Mind, the Neighbours-star-turned-pop-pinup hasn t just borrowed the odd fashion tip from the era of pink stilettos and leg warmers; she s time-warped straight back to 1983. Following the lead of single Hypnotic , her second album is awash with the tinniest of drum-machine beats, funky rock guitars, daft vocal effects and every two-dimensional robotic squelch a roomful of synthesizers can manage. With equally over-the-top choruses, Everything I Hate , Roll Over and the title track make great pop songs out of her electro-funk obsession. Elsewhere though, the tunes struggle to compete with the style overload, and for Over n Out , Desire and Somebody Out There , her sexy gloss and overblown backing tracks start to sound like decidedly naff gimmicks. She s definitely trying a little too hard.
