FEKO is a comprehensive computational electromagnetics (CEM) code used widely in the telecommunications, automobile, space and defense industries.
FEKO is a comprehensive computational electromagnetics (CEM) software used widely in the telecommunications, automobile, aerospace and defense industries. FEKO offers several frequency and time domain EM solvers under a single license. Hybridization of these methods enables the efficient analysis of a broad spectrum of EM problems, including antennas, microstrip circuits, RF components and biomedical systems, the placement of antennas on electrically large structures, the calculation of scattering as well as the investigation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
FEKO also offers tools that are tailored to solve more challenging EM interactions, including dedicated solvers for characteristic mode analysis (CMA) and bi-directional cables coupling. Special formulations are also included for efficient simulation of integrated windscreen antennas and antenna arrays.

Combined with the MLFMM, and the true hybridization of the solvers, FEKO is considered the global market leader for antenna placement analysis.

FEKO New Features

This is the first release of FEKO within Altair HyperWorks and HyperWorks version numbering is adopted.
The main features of this release with HyperWorks 14.0 are:

Curvilinear meshes for wires
Support for curvilinear mesh segments has been added for the method of moments (MoM) and multilevel fast multipole method (MLFMM). Curvilinear mesh segments allow a more accurate representation of curved wires than linear elements. When meshing a complex, curved model, the same geometrical accuracy can be achieved with fewer curvilinear segments than with linear segments. This is beneficial, since a mesh with fewer unknowns results in an overall reduction of computational requirements. Curvilinear segment meshing is the new default setting for meshing wires. Curvilinear segments are supported in various ways:

Curvilinear segments may be imported from NASTRAN, ANSYS CDB and Abaqus file formats.
Curvilinear segments may be exported to NASTRAN, Gerber and AutoCAD DXF file formats.
The currents on curvilinear segments can be displayed in POSTFEKO.

HOBF for hybrid MoM/UTD and hybrid MoM/RL-GO
Higher order basis functions (HOBF) can now be used for the MoM regions in the following hybrid techniques:

MoM hybridised with ray launching geometrical optics (RL-GO)
MoM hybridised with the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD)
HOBF is supported for curvilinear mesh elements, which allow complex, curved geometry to be represented accurately by coarse meshes containing large triangles. The hybrid solvers in FEKO are applicable to electrically large problems. With the support of HOBF in the MoM regions in the hybrid Mom/RL-GO and MoM/UTD techniques, a reduction in memory and run-time can be achieved for these computationally expensive problems.

Finite difference time domain extensions
Multiple configurations in a single model.
Perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) boundary conditions (in addition to open and perfect electric conductor (PEC) boundaries).
Zero impedance loads.
Ports without sources or loads. Such ports are treated as short circuits (similar to the MoM).
An intrinsic wire radius definition. The user does not need to specify a wire radius, in which case the radius will be determined by the solver.
OpenMP parallelisation for multicore machines

Macro recording in CADFEKO
Scripts can be created by starting the recording, manually carrying out actions in CADFEKO and stopping the recording once all the actions have been performed. Generated scripts can be modified to perform more advanced or repetitive actions. Script recording also allows users to learn by analysing the generated scripts in addition to the examples in the documentation.

Parameter sweep (for both CADFEKO and POSTFEKO)
Parameter sweeps are done through scripts which can be applied for example to do manufacturing tolerance studies. A CADFEKO script gives the user a list of variables derived from the model to select for parametric investigation. A POSTFEKO script combines simulation results to Description responses as a function of the parameter variation.

For example a printed PIFA antenna (GSM 1800) is analyzed for etching tolerances (dx=+- 100um), substrate height (h=+-20%) or permittivity (Er=+-20%).

FEKO - HyperStudy Integration
HyperStudy is a solver neutral design exploration, optimization and stochastic analysis tool. HyperStudy generates intelligent variations of the parameters of any system model and reveals relationships between these parameters and the system responses.

Using HyperStudy, users can make better decisions and optimize the performance, reliability and robustness of their systems.

Standard output parameters e.g. impedance, gain, efficiency, etc. are easily extracted and post-processing can also be controlled using Lua scripts.
