Lured to Mars by the Ultor Corporations promise of a better life, thousands have come to seek their fortune and work for the massive mining company. But all is not as it seems. Half a century after the Red Faction resistance and their Marauder allies freed Mars from the brutal Earth Defense Force, harmony on Mars is again threatened but this time by a lethal force shrouded in mystery. When the massive Terraformer that supplies Mars with its Earth like air and weather is destroyed, the atmosphere turns to chaos, super tornados and lightning storms engulf the planet. To survive, the Colonists flee to the underground mines and build a network of habitable caves.

Half a century after the Red Faction resistance freed Mars, the red planet again becomes a battleground. Colonists struggle for survival in the underground mines after the surface is rendered uninhabitable. When Darius Mason, grandson of revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya, unknowingly releases a long-dormant evil, Armageddon is unleashed on Mars. As settlements are torn asunder, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind. The battle will take them to the core of the storm-blasted planet through ice caves and lava flows until they are face to face against the unspeakable threat.

Mars, in 2170 since the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla, the previous games in the series, took 50 years. Then the resistance forces and their allies managed to defend their freedom and establish a world of peace and tranquility. However, they lasted long. As a result of man made disaster live on the surface of Mars was more impossible, and the colonists had to move to the only safe place underground caves.
